A client in the home-furnishing space asked whether we could add a “view in your room” AR feature to their product pages, the kind of feature you see on the websites of the big national furniture retailers where you point your phone at your living room and see the couch sitting in it before you buy. It’s a completely reasonable ask, and WebXR and WebAR have genuinely matured to the point where this is technically achievable without asking a visitor to download a separate app. So instead of giving an offhand yes or no, I actually priced the whole thing out properly, end to end, and I want to walk through what that process actually looked like.
The core technology genuinely isn’t the hard part anymore
Browser-based AR through the WebXR Device API no longer requires an app download, which used to be the single biggest barrier to adoption for this kind of feature on a small business site — asking a first-time visitor to install an app just to preview a couch was always going to kill conversion. A visitor now taps a button, grants camera access, points their phone, and sees the product rendered in their actual space in real time. This part genuinely works, and it works considerably better than it did even a couple of years back, when browser support was patchy enough that you’d need separate fallback experiences for different devices. If this same request had landed on my desk in 2022, my honest answer would have been “come back in a couple of years, it’s not reliable enough yet across enough devices to be worth building.” That’s genuinely no longer the honest objection.
The actual cost that almost never gets talked about in the trend articles
Every single product that needs an AR preview requires a proper 3D model, and a proper 3D model is not the same asset as a product photograph, no matter how good the photograph is. It’s a fundamentally separate production pipeline — either photogrammetry-based 3D scanning of the physical product, which needs a controlled studio setup and specialized equipment, or modeling the product from scratch in something like Blender, which requires a genuinely different skill set than photography and takes real hours per item. Then every model needs to be optimized down to a reasonable file size, typically using the glTF format with Draco compression, so it doesn’t tank load times and battery life on a mobile device that’s already running the camera and doing real-time rendering simultaneously.
For a catalog of five or six hero products — the bestsellers, the pieces that drive the most purchase hesitation because they’re expensive and hard to picture in a real space — this pipeline is genuinely viable and worth the investment. For a catalog of two hundred SKUs across an entire furniture line, this becomes a substantial, ongoing production cost that most small businesses asking for this feature haven’t actually budgeted for, because the case studies and trend articles showcasing this technology never show the production pipeline sitting behind the flashy demo. They show the finished AR preview, not the weeks of 3D modeling work that made it possible.
What I actually recommended, and why
We scoped this to their four bestselling pieces instead of the full catalog. That’s enough to be a genuine, meaningful differentiator on exactly the product pages where purchase hesitation is highest and where an AR preview does real work reducing that hesitation, without asking a client with a realistic, modest budget to fund 3D scanning and optimization for their entire inventory upfront. We built the feature so that adding additional products later is a contained, well-understood cost rather than a mystery, which means the client can expand it gradually as specific products prove out the investment through actual conversion data rather than committing to the full catalog on faith.
The broader pattern worth applying to any trend feature like this
This is usually the honest answer with a feature like WebXR for a small business: not a flat “yes, it’s the future” or a dismissive “no, it’s a gimmick,” but “yes, scoped specifically to where it demonstrably moves a purchase decision, with a clear-eyed understanding of the ongoing production cost involved.” If someone’s telling you a trend technology like this is either the inevitable future of everything or a total waste of time with nothing in between, they’re usually trying to sell you something either way, whether that’s a wildly ambitious build they know you can’t maintain, or a dismissal that’s really just an excuse to avoid learning something genuinely new.
